Fri 12 Apr - Asheville, NC

Time to get away from the tourist crowds and go to the... Mountain crowds. We are leaving Savannah for the Appalachian Mountains, Blue Ridge Parkway, and for the next two nights we will be in Asheville, North Carolina.

Asheville is the first town of any magnitude at the south eastern end of the area, but we were also recommended to go here by a couple we chatted to in Charleston.

Longish drive of course, more than 300 miles, 500 km, but almost all of it on interstate roads I95 and I26 so we travelled fast.

Few pictures today, interstate road travel does mostly not really lend itself to scenic photography. We did stop in Spartanburg, SC, for lunch at Cracker Barrel as we had seen them advertised "country meals" for very little. It just had to be better than the usual suspects of American fast food chains.

Cracker Barrel is both a restaurant and a store for country furniture and goods. Outside the place, they were displaying for sale a variety of rocking chairs and Di "test rocked" a few.
BTW, the food was brilliant. Friday's special was 4 cod file's with 2 sides (a given for Hans) and Di has soup and meatloaf. All for less than $20 including tax. The server (they don't call them waiter or waitresses here) was a very chirpy young lady who was clearly in the right job. All good fun and we left very pleased.

Back on the road, we saw one of these triple backed semi trailers (we made up that description). We see them every so often but have not managed to take a photo before. It just looks unreal.
Our motel is Asheville is Super 8, one of those chains together with Motel 6 that have, perhaps undeserved, a somewhat dubious reputation. We haven't tried either of these guys before, but it turned out that Super 8 in Asheville is undergoing major renovations and that our room was very slick and new with still a faint smell of paint. We were impressed, in particular since the price of the room was very reasonable.

After checking in, we drive the car first to Dollar Tree ($2 shop) to get various provisions and then to Ingles (slick grocery store) to complement, including beer and wine.

Back to Super 8 for a few drinks and a delicious microwave meal cooked by Di. All good.
